{"id":764,"date":"2012-09-02T00:28:54","date_gmt":"2012-09-01T23:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mohoyt.com\/blog\/?p=764"},"modified":"2012-09-02T00:28:54","modified_gmt":"2012-09-01T23:28:54","slug":"little-similarities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mohoyt.com\/blog\/2012\/little-similarities\/","title":{"rendered":"Little Similarities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Walking though Dorchester today, I came across one of the 2010 Oakley print ads in the &#8220;Rebels&#8221; campaign, all done by a team at <a href=\"http:\/\/the-dept.com\" title=\"the-dept.com\" target=\"_blank\">the-dept.com<\/a> (hadn&#8217;t heard of them before &#8211; but it transpires that they seem rather cool, judging by their website that is&#8230;). One of the prints in this ad lineup looks a lot like this:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/the-dept.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/oakley_ad_bubba.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/the-dept.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/oakley_ad_bubba.png\" title=\"The-Dept Oakley ads\" class=\"aligncenter\" width=\"980\" height=\"524\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So anyway, this got me thinking\u2014&#8221;I&#8217;ve seen this somewhere before&#8221;\u2014and it turns out this whole ad campaign is remarkably similar to some of the old old pre-Macintosh and post-Macintosh-pre-iMac Apple ads.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mohoyt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/87IIGS_Software_Promo4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mohoyt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/87IIGS_Software_Promo4-691x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Apple Ads\" width=\"691\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mohoyt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/87IIGS_Software_Promo4-691x1024.jpg 691w, https:\/\/mohoyt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/87IIGS_Software_Promo4-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/mohoyt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/87IIGS_Software_Promo4.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 691px) 100vw, 691px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yes agreed it&#8217;s primarily the typeface (A tightly set Garamond variant, Apple Garamond in the Apple case, and I don&#8217;t know what, but it&#8217;s still pretty similar in the Oakley one), but there&#8217;s also the use of whitespace, the simple imagery and the fairly blocky justification of text (much more so with the Oakley, but then again Apple ads in this style ran for a while and I&#8217;m sure there are some more block-like variants).
